Lebanon Student StarPack 2014

LibanPack, the Lebanese Packaging Center has organized the Award Ceremony and Exhibition of Lebanon Student StarPack 2014 for the fifth year in a row, with the support of the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI), and UNIDO (UnitedNations Industrial Development Organization). This year, 500 students from Lebanese leading universities and universities from Egypt, Jordan and Palestine have participated in the contest.

 

The Award Ceremony took place at the UNESCO Palace on May 13, 2014 at 6 PM under the Patronage and presence of H.E, the Minister of Industry, Dr. Hussein Al Haj Hassan. Morethan 1,000 persons ranging from ministers, ambassadors, head of UN agencies,professors, students and head of economic associations, industrialists,businessmen and media representatives attended the event. The award ceremony was followed by an exhibition that featured the innovative projects of the participating students.

 

Ms. Soha Atallah , LibanPack Director, inaugurated the ceremony and explained the achievements made by the Center. She explained that the main role of LibanPack is to increase awareness among the industrialists and farmers on the importance of packaging to increase their competitiveness. Furthermore she focused onthe marketing role of packaging as the silent salesman that different the product from its competitor and trigger the attention of the consumer to buy the product.

She added that LibanPack is anactive member of the World Packaging Organization and that LibanPack  has been accredited by the  CIEH (Chartered Institute Ofenvironmental Health in Britain) therefore, the Center offers training courseson food safety and packaging recognized internationally.

Ms. Atallah concluded that StarPack competition is the first of its kind in the Arab world.

 

 In his speech, Dr. Fady Gemayel , President of ALI and President of the LibanPack expressed his pleasure to  present his formal first speech as president of ALI in StarPack award ceremony due to the symbolic significance of the ceremony which has always been considered as a meeting point  of the powerful: Lebanese youth, universities and Lebanese industrialists.

Dr. Gemayel, insisted that Lebanese industrialist have always demonstrated commitment to hold on to their presence,and have strong determination to overcome all the financial and managerial difficulties that are facing the industry. Dr Gemayel stated that he believesthat the Lebanese industry is the guarantee to ensure and achieve sustainablegrowth.

 

Dr. Gemayel declared his full commitment to support the Lebanese industry and to link it with the Lebanese Diaspora. Furthermore, he  declared that ALI willsupport the productive activities generating new job opportunities, and tosupport the capacity of young people in a small business, and reduce the problem of unemployment.  Dr Gemayel stated that according to the WorldBank,  the Lebanese economy is creating  around 5 thousands of jobsonly, while Lebanon needs more than 20 thousand and opportunity. This is thereal challenge, to maintain the young energies and making use of them in ourcountry. 

 

During the Ceremony, His Excellency,the Minister of Industry, Dr. Hussein Al-Haj Hassan described  the functional role of packaging  in protecting the products against external factors and in creating  an added value for  the agricultural and industrial products. He also insisted on the need for creativity and innovation in packaging to differentiate the Lebanese products on the international level.

Dr. Hussein al-Haj Hassan pointed about “the need to comply with standards and specifications for the packaging and labeling of the Lebanese products, especially for the  food sector. 

 

Mr. Naji Boulos , General Manager ofMemac Ogilvy and Vice President of the International Advertising Association in Middle East and North Africa -MENA region, highlighted  the importance of packaging  for consumer where conducted studies  in Europe and America,  have proved that packaging affects  with more than 65 % of the purchasing decisions made in supermarket. According to Mr. Boulos, packaging plays an important role in the  purchasing  decision makingsince packaging is an integral  part of the brand, advertising tools and in delivering the advertising message. Mr. Boulos is also a member of the Jury of StarPack Competition and he explained all the criteria that was adopted to grade the students project and to select the winners.

 

The ceremony was presented by Ms. Jessy Trad Kastoun, and included a distinctive music performance by Nadine Shehada Jazz band.

The competition was divided into two categories: the visual design category and the structural design category for packaging. Furthermore a prize for creative Packaging design was awarded byUnipak, a member of INDEVCO group. 

 

Structural Category winners:

1 st Prize Winner: Hala Tout,Lebanese University- Tripoli

2 nd Prize Winner: DianaDebian, Lebanese University- Deir El Kamar

3 rd Prize Winner: Nour Bou Chakra,LAU- Beirut

Visual Category Winners:

1 st Prize Winner: Nabil HAidar, RHU

2 nd Prize Winner: Jean Rizk, AUST

3 rd Prize Winner:Lina Haidar, LIU
